I recently read an article detailing how a chemical company persevered through a powerful EF-3 tornado and successfully continued operations while rebuilding. What a remarkable and admirable challenge to overcome. The plant sustained extensive damage, including completely wiping out warehouses, office areas, electrical infrastructure, piping systems, and communications were all down. The "good news?" Some areas of the facility survived destruction, including the company's central server, "saving business records and many other crucial files."
As the company worked to get the operations up and running by contracting with other facilities to temporarily supply customers and outsourcing several areas of production, I believe this "good news" was in reality a complete stroke of luck. A spared central server saved the business from extensive downtime, or worse, going out of business. What if the central server housing business records and crucial files had been destroyed? Continuing operations, even if that is done through temporary outsourcing, becomes a nightmare when you've lost all of your customer data, vendor data, and internal records.
This is a great example of why a disaster recovery solution is such an important addition to your business. Insurance may help you replace the physical loss, but losing critical business data can permanently close your doors as there is no replacement.
If you, like many businesses today, find you don't have the time or resources to properly protect and maintain your business continuity, I encourage you to look at options such as a cloud disaster recovery system.
There are truly so many scenarios in which a disaster recovery cloud solution could save your business, that I hope you'll look beyond the risks of a natural disaster to the possibility of internal disasters, human error, etc. Don't leave your business at risk of disaster by overlooking such an important part of the preparation.
